Zain Javadd "Zayn" Malik (born 12 January 1993) is an English songwriter and singer. He participated as a solo contestant in the audition process for the popular British music competition television series, The X Factor in 2010, and he soon became a part of five-piece boy band One Direction, which went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands across time. He quit the group in March 2015, after which he signed a recording contract as a solo artist with RCA Records.
On his first solo studio album, Mind of Mine (2016), which took on a more alternative R&B music style, and its lead single, "Pillowtalk," he became the first British male artist ever to debut both at number one in the UK and the US with a debut single and album. The next successive singles included: "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," with Taylor Swift, and "Dusk Till Dawn" featuring Sia. Both of these songs enjoyed international acclaim. He released his second studio venture, Icarus Falls, in 2018 and followed it with his third album, Nobody Is Listening, in 2021.

Early life
Zain Malik was born on January 12, 1993, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, the son of an immigrated Pakistani Muslim father, Yaser Malik, and a White British mother of English and Irish descent, Trisha (née Brannan), who converted to Islam after marriage. He has one elder sister, Doniya, and two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa.
Growing up in East Bowling, Bradford, in a working-class family and neighbourhood, Malik attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School (now Tong Leadership Academy) in Bradford. He joined performing arts courses as a teenager and took part in school productions. He was raised on urban music records in his father's collection, which were mostly R&B, hip hop, and reggae. He wrote raps while at school but first sang on stage when up-and-coming singer Jay Sean visited his school. Malik also faced his fears about bullying by boxing for about two years-from the ages of 15 to 17. His idea was to study English and become an English teacher but then had music in mind instead of anything academic.
After dating fellow The X Factor contestant Rebecca Ferguson, Malik started dating Perrie Edwards, an English singer in the group Little Mix, in December 2011; the two became engaged in August 2013 but split in August 2015.
Malik had a tumultuous on-off relationship with Gigi Hadid, an American model beginning in late 2015. Hadid had a role in the music video he shot for "Pillowtalk," and the two also graced the pages of Vogue's August 2017 issue together. In 2017, both of them were photographed by Hadid for the campaign of Versace. Their daughter was born in September 2020. Their family had been based mostly at their working farm in the countryside of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where Malik took care of horses and cows, as Hadid's family members, mother Yolanda and sister Bella, also owned land there. The couple broke up in October 2021 when Malik got accused by Hadid's mother of hitting her, and Malik entered no contest to four counts of harassment. Court papers stated that Malik "grabbed and shoved her into a dresser causing mental anguish and physical pain" and said "lewd, lascivious, threatening or obscene words". He was sentenced by a Pennsylvania court to 360 days of probation and completion of anger management and domestic violence education programmes.
